What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a model with the real object or a photo of it. They explain how the model helps and what it cannot show accurately because of its size, features, or material.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a toy bridge and a bridge photo, a student can name one useful match and one mismatch. The student supports each claim with evidence such as shape, scale, texture, or strength.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a model is an exact copy or that only size can differ. They may also assume plastic, clay, or paper behaves like the material in the real object.
How to Assess It
- Show a plastic toy tree and a photo of a real tree. Ask students to write one way the model helps and one thing it cannot show accurately.

Ways to Teach It
Compare a clay animal model with photos, then label differences in size, texture, color, and body parts.
Ask, “Would a paper model of a boat prove the real boat can float?” Have students explain their answer.
Sort model cards into helpful and misleading groups, then earn a point by naming evidence for each choice.
Examine a building model and discuss how an architect uses it, including what must still be tested in the real building.
