What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name what each plant or animal eats in a simple sequence. They draw pictures and arrows to show how food connects the organisms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can arrange plant and animal cards in a correct feeding order. The student can explain each link using a sentence such as, “The rabbit eats grass.”
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think plants get food by eating soil. They may place organisms in size order instead of feeding order. They may reverse arrows because they confuse “eats” with “is eaten by.”
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of grass, a grasshopper, and a frog. Ask them to arrange, draw, and explain the feeding order.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs arrange plant and animal picture cards, then connect them with yarn to show feeding links.
Show grass, rabbit, and fox pictures, then ask, “What would happen to the fox if the rabbits disappeared?”
Play Food Chain Relay, where teams race to place shuffled organism cards in a correct feeding order.
Observe birds or insects outside, then draw one possible feeding connection involving a schoolyard plant or animal.
