- Students decide why someone received money. They tell whether the money came from work or selling something, or was given without work.

- Students correctly sort simple situations as income or gifts. They explain that income comes from work or selling something, while a gift is given without required work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call all money from family a gift, even when it is payment for chores. They may also think gifts must be cash rather than checks or digital payments.
How to Assess It
- Read four scenarios about earning or receiving money. Have students label each one income or gift and explain one choice aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards showing jobs, chores, birthdays, and holidays, then have them sort each card under Income or Gift.
Ask, “Mia gets $5 for washing a car. Leo gets $5 in a birthday card. How are the payments different?”
Play Income or Gift by reading scenario cards while students hold up an I card or a G card.
Show a sample pay stub and birthday card, then discuss why money might come with each one.
