What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize and name common flat shapes even when the shapes are turned or shown in different sizes. They understand that every square is also a rectangle.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name shapes in different sizes, colors, and positions. They explain that a square is also a rectangle because it has four straight sides and four corners.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a turned shape becomes a different shape. They may call every four-sided shape a square or miss that a square also belongs in the rectangle group.
How to Assess It
- Show a circle, triangle, long rectangle, and turned square. Ask students to name each shape, then place a counter on every rectangle.

Give pairs shape cards to sort, then have students place every square inside the rectangle group.
