What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare two written numerals from 0 through 20. They describe the relationship using words such as greater than, less than, or equal to.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given any two written numerals from 0 through 20, students correctly identify which is greater or less, or say they are equal. They use a complete comparison sentence and can check with a number line.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the numeral that looks larger on the page instead of comparing its value. They may reverse “greater than” and “less than,” or think the numeral named first must be greater.

How to Assess It

Show 7 and 12 on an exit ticket. Ask students to circle the greater number and complete: “___ is greater than ___.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs numeral cards and connecting cubes, then have students build each number and state which numeral represents more or fewer cubes.

  2. Display 9 and 14, then ask students to write or dictate: “I know ___ is greater because ___.”

  3. Play Compare and Keep: partners flip numeral cards, say a correct comparison sentence, and keep both cards when the partner agrees.

  4. Show two classroom supply labels, such as 8 pencils and 15 crayons, and ask which supply has more and which has fewer.
