What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show math thinking with objects, pictures, numerals, graphs, and spoken or written words. They explain how their representations connect and support an answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a small quantity or number story, students model it, draw it, write the numeral, and explain their thinking aloud. Each representation shows the same amount.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a correct numeral but draw a different amount. They may describe what they made without explaining how the objects, picture, and numeral match.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Draw a picture showing 6. Write the numeral. Finish: I know there are 6 because _____.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs eight counters and numeral cards, then have them build, sketch, label, and explain how each representation matches.
Display two drawings of five and ask, “Which drawing shows five clearly, and how do you know?”
Play a matching game with cards showing numerals, dot sets, ten-frames, simple graphs, and number words.
