What Students Need to Do

Students read the x-value first and move left or right from the origin. They then use the y-value to move up or down, including fractional and decimal distances.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately plot positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals. They place each point in the correct quadrant and explain its location using horizontal and vertical movement.

Common Misconceptions

Students often reverse the x-value and y-value or move vertically first. They may ignore negative signs, confuse quadrant numbers, or treat fractions and decimals as whole-number distances.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Plot A(-2.5, 1), B(3/4, -2), C(-1.5, -1/2), and D(2, 2.25). Label each point's quadrant.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Make a floor coordinate grid with tape, then have students stand at locations drawn from cards containing integers, fractions, and decimals.

  2. Ask students to explain how the signs in (-2.5, 3/4) determine movement and quadrant before plotting it.

  3. Play Coordinate Relay: teams draw a card, plot the point, and earn a point only if teammates verify both coordinates.

  4. Use a city map centered at city hall, and assign rational coordinates to landmarks located north, south, east, and west.
