What Students Need to Do: Students explain that labor is the work people do to earn income. They connect human capital, such as knowledge, skills, education, and training, to the kinds of work people can do and what they may earn.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain that workers earn income by providing labor. They can use an example to show how added knowledge, skills, or training may lead to different work and higher income.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think all workers earn the same income or that working longer always means earning more. They may also think education guarantees a high income, rather than increasing skills and job options.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “Luis completes mechanic training and learns to repair engines. How could this training affect his work and income?”

Lesson moves

Give groups job cards, skill cards, and play money, then have them match training to jobs and explain possible income differences.
Ask students to write: “How could learning a new skill change the jobs a person can do and the income earned?”
Play a matching game where students pair workers with needed skills, then justify which worker might earn more and why.
Have students interview a trusted adult about one skill used at work and how learning that skill affected job choices or income.
