What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students build a number with objects or drawings and identify its hundreds, tens, and ones. They show the same total in at least two ways, such as 43 as 4 tens and 3 ones or 3 tens and 13 ones.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build or draw any given number through 120 and correctly label each place. The student can regroup a hundred or a ten, explain that the total stays the same, and check by counting.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the 1 in 105 as one rather than one hundred. They may think a number has only one correct grouping or forget that one ten can be traded for ten ones. A zero may cause them to omit a place entirely.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Draw 114 in two different ways with base-ten pictures. Label how many hundreds, tens, and ones appear in each drawing.
