What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students look at a title to predict what an informational text will teach. They use photos, diagrams, maps, labels, or simple charts to find facts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use the title to name the text’s main subject. They point to a photo, diagram, map, or label and explain one fact it provides.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat pictures as decoration instead of sources of facts. They may also confuse a title with a label or guess from the picture without checking the words.
How to Assess It
- Show a short page titled “Parts of a Plant” with a labeled diagram. Ask, “What do the title and diagram teach you?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short nonfiction book, sticky notes, and crayons to mark the title and one graphic that teaches a fact.
Display a page about frogs and ask, “What does the title tell us, and what new fact does the picture show?”
Play Graphic Detective by showing pages with photos, maps, charts, and diagrams, then having students match each graphic to a fact card.
Examine a school lunch menu and weather chart, then ask students what each title and picture helps families learn.
