What Students Need to Do
- Students use headings, captions, labels, photographs, and simple diagrams to find facts. They tell which feature helped them answer a question or learn something new.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students point to the heading, caption, label, picture, or diagram that helps answer a question. They explain what information they found and where they found it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat photos and diagrams as decoration. They may confuse a heading with a caption or read labels without connecting them to the pictured parts.
How to Assess It
- Give students one informational page with a heading, caption, and labeled picture. Ask them to circle the feature that answers, “What is this animal’s body covering?”
