What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students remember and write the correct spellings of commonly used words they have been taught. They use those spellings in labels, phrases, and simple sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students spell taught common words correctly without copying them. They use the words accurately in short sentences and notice when a spelling does not look right.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may spell every word by sound, even when a common word has an unexpected spelling. They may also reverse letters or remember the right letters in the wrong order.
How to Assess It
- Dictate five previously taught common words, then ask students to write one of them in a sentence. Check letter order and spelling from memory.
