What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add, change, or remove letters to make new words. They read the original word and the new word, then tell what changed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use letter tiles to make a new word by adding, changing, or removing one letter. The student reads each new word and identifies what changed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change a sound but leave the letters unchanged. They may change several letters at once or create a letter string that is not a real word.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word it. Ask them to add a letter to make sit, change one letter to make sat, then delete one letter to make at.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles to build it, add p to make pit, change i to a for pat, then remove p for at.
Show cat and at, then ask students to explain how the words are alike, different, and connected.
Play a word chain game where students change one letter at a time to move from sit to sat to mat.
Place word labels near classroom objects, then have students change one letter in pen, map, or bag to make another word.
