What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say the sound for each letter and blend the sounds from left to right. They read short words with one vowel and two to four consonants.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students track each letter from left to right and blend the sounds into a whole word. They read words such as am, cat, frog, and nest without dropping or adding sounds.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the picture or read only the first sound. They may drop sounds in blends, omit final consonants, or add a vowel between two consonants.
How to Assess It
- Show students am, map, stop, and hand. Ask them to point under each letter, say the sounds, and blend the word aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles to build am, cat, frog, and nest, then have them touch each tile and blend the sounds.
Ask, “Which sound was hardest to hear in frog or nest?” Have students explain how they checked every letter.
Play Blend and Cover by showing a word card, having students read it, then covering the matching picture on a game board.
Use classroom labels such as clock, desk, and flag, and have students sound out each label before placing it on the object.
