What Students Need to Do
- Students mark vowels and consonants, find likely syllable breaks, and read the parts together. They try another break when a VCV word sounds wrong. They use word stress to choose a natural pronunciation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given words such as napkin, river, hotel, and hundred, a student divides and reads each word accurately. The student keeps blends together and marks the syllable that receives the strongest stress.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide every VCV word before the consonant, reading river with a long i. They may split a blend, writing hund/red instead of hun/dred. Some give every syllable equal stress or confuse syllables with individual sounds.
