What Students Need to Do
- Students find the vowels in a two-syllable word and use the consonants between them to choose a likely break. They read each syllable, blend the parts, and adjust the split when the first try does not sound like a word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can mark vowels, label the pattern, place a syllable break, and read the whole word smoothly. They keep common consonant teams together when needed and try another VCV split when the first pronunciation sounds wrong.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split every word between the same letters, especially treating VCV as having only one possible break. They may separate a consonant blend or digraph, or read the syllables correctly but fail to blend them into the whole word.
How to Assess It
- Give students rabbit, music, and monster. Ask them to mark vowels and consonants, draw each syllable break, then read the words aloud.
