What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to spoken words and notice which ones begin with the same sound. They identify matching words and say the shared beginning sound.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given three or four spoken words, the student identifies those with the same beginning sound. The student can repeat the shared sound without needing printed letters.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may match words that rhyme instead of words that begin with the same sound. They may focus on letter names or picture meanings rather than listening to the first sound.
How to Assess It
- Say, “moon, map, sun.” Ask, “Which two words start with the same sound, and what sound do you hear?”

Ways to Teach It
Place small toys in a bag, name each toy aloud, and have students sort toys that begin with the same sound.
Say, “Silly snakes sip soup,” then ask students to name the repeated beginning sound and add another word.
Play Sound Corners by naming four picture cards, then having students move to the corner showing a matching beginning sound.
Take a classroom sound hunt, naming objects such as table, tape, and pencil, then grouping objects with matching first sounds.
