What Students Need to Do
- Students tell or write a personal story about something that happened to them, using an order readers can follow. They also create informational text that names a topic and gives accurate facts.

- Students dictate or write a personal narrative with events in a clear order. They also create an informational text with a clear topic and accurate facts, using drawings when helpful.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may tell unrelated events instead of keeping a personal narrative in order. They may treat an informational text as a made-up story or give opinions instead of facts.
How to Assess It
- Show a playground picture. Ask each student to dictate one sentence about a personal playground experience and one sentence that teaches a playground fact.

Ways to Teach It
Give students three picture cards from a familiar event, then have them sequence the cards and dictate a beginning, middle, and end.
Ask, “Would you rather write about your birthday or teach someone about frogs, and what details would each piece need?”
Play Genre Sort: students place picture and sentence cards under “story” or “information,” then explain one choice.
Create a class guide called How We Get Ready for Lunch, with each child contributing one clear fact or step.
