What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students present a piece they created to classmates or another audience. They show the page, speak clearly, and explain what their pictures, marks, or words say.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a finished piece and presents it to a partner, small group, or class. The student explains the drawing or words and answers a simple question about the piece.
Common Misconceptions
- Some children think their work must have perfect spelling before anyone can see it. Others show only the picture, speak too softly, or forget to explain what their marks and words mean.
How to Assess It
- Ask each child to show a one-page piece to a partner, name the topic, and read or tell one sentence from it. Check that the partner can see, hear, and understand the message.

Staple students’ labeled drawings into a class book, then let each child hold the book and present one page.
Ask, “What do you want your partner to notice?” and have children rehearse an answer before presenting.
