What Students Need to Do: Students prepare a finished piece so another person can read and understand it. They choose an audience and present the piece by reading, displaying, or giving it to someone.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student produces a readable final copy and chooses a suitable way to present it. The student can read it aloud, display it, or give it to an intended reader.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a first draft is ready for an audience without a final check. They may also confuse sharing with simply handing the paper to the teacher.
How to Assess It: Have each student prepare one finished piece, then share it with a partner. Check for readable work and a clear attempt to address the listener.

Lesson moves

Have students make a class book by copying one finished piece onto clean paper and adding an illustration.
Ask, "Who should read your writing, and what do you want that person to understand?"
Run an Author’s Chair round where students read one piece and listeners name one detail they remember.
Mail student letters to school staff members, then discuss how writing reaches a real reader.
