What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft with an adult and find words that describe people, places, animals, or things. They add or correct describing words and use a, an, or the before nouns when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can reread a simple draft with an adult and spot a missing or incorrect article. The student can add a fitting describing word without changing the sentence's meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave out a, an, or the because the sentence still sounds clear to them. They may write an big apple by checking apple instead of the next word's sound. They may also write dog brown instead of brown dog.
How to Assess It
- Give students the draft sentence, "I see owl." Ask them to rewrite it with an article and a describing word, then circle both additions.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs noun picture cards and adjective cards, then have them build phrases with magnetic a, an, or the tiles.
Read "The dog ran," then ask: Which words could help us picture the dog, and which article belongs before it?
Play Article Switch: show a noun phrase, change its adjective, and have students hold up a or an to match the new sound.
