What Students Need to Do: Students use describing words to tell more about people, places, things, and animals. They edit their writing to add or correct a, an, and the before nouns.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students reread a draft and add or replace adjectives to make nouns more specific. They use a, an, and the correctly and can point out each one.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every word before a noun an adjective or leave out a, an, and the. They may choose a or an by spelling instead of the opening sound.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Rewrite “I saw dog.” Add a correct article and one adjective before dog, then circle both words.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards and word tiles, then have them build noun phrases such as “the spotted dog” or “an orange hat.”
Show a plain sentence, “The bird flew,” and ask students to rewrite it with two words that help readers picture the bird.
Play Adjective Match by having students pair noun cards with fitting describing-word cards, then read each phrase aloud with an article.
Have students examine classroom labels or signs, then write three noun phrases describing real objects, such as “the blue bin.”
