What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify different organizational patterns used in separate parts of one informational text. They explain how those patterns work together to build and support the author’s main claim.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can mark where a text shifts from one pattern to another, such as comparison to cause and effect. They can explain how each pattern adds evidence, context, or reasoning for the author’s claim.

Common Misconceptions

Students may label the whole text with one pattern and miss shifts between sections. They may also name patterns correctly but fail to explain how each section supports the author’s main claim.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article with two clear sections. Ask them to label each section’s pattern and write one sentence explaining how the patterns work together to support the claim.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a cut-up article to arrange, label each section’s pattern, and connect each section to the author’s claim with string.

  2. Ask students to write: Why might an author shift from problem and solution to cause and effect when supporting a claim?

  3. Play Structure Switch by reading short passages while teams identify each pattern and explain its job for the claim.

  4. Analyze a school policy announcement to see how background, causes, effects, and proposed solutions build support for the policy.
