What Students Need to Do: Students create a clear research plan that names the question, needed information, possible sources, steps, and deadlines. They adjust that plan as their focus, evidence, or limits change.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student creates a workable plan with a focused question, research steps, useful source types, and deadlines. The student revises the plan when evidence, feedback, or time limits change.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat the first plan as fixed or list only a broad topic. They may change the final product without adjusting questions, sources, tasks, or deadlines.
How to Assess It: Give students a research scenario with one unavailable source and a narrowed deadline. Ask them to revise the provided plan and explain two changes.

Lesson moves

Give groups source cards, task cards, and a calendar, then have them build and revise a research plan after one source disappears.
Ask students to explain which part of a sample research plan they would revise first and why.
Run a plan repair relay where teams fix vague questions, missing source types, unrealistic deadlines, and poorly ordered tasks.
Have students plan research for a school policy proposal, then revise the plan after receiving a shorter deadline and stakeholder feedback.
