What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize a research project before gathering information. They identify needed sources, set steps and deadlines, then adjust the plan as new information or problems arise.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates an ordered plan with a research question, source needs, tasks, and checkpoints. The student updates the plan when sources, findings, deadlines, or questions change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first plan as fixed or list only a final due date. They may choose sources before clarifying the research question, or change tasks without explaining why.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write a three-step research plan for investigating school start times, then revise one step after learning that interviews are unavailable.

Give groups question cards, source cards, and deadline cards, then have them arrange a workable research plan and revise it after an obstacle card.
Ask students to explain which part of a research plan should change when early sources contradict the original assumption.
