What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely, hold several steps in mind, and carry them out in the correct order. They also give clear directions and respond when a listener asks for clarification.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students complete a multistep task in the correct order without needing repeated directions. They give precise directions, answer clarifying questions, and revise unclear steps.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may act on the first step and forget the rest. They may confuse sequence words or overlook conditions such as “before,” “unless,” or “after.” When speaking, they often omit details or use vague words like “it” and “there.”
How to Assess It
- Read aloud: “Fold the paper in half, label the top right corner A, circle A, then write one clarifying question below it.” Students complete the task, then record their own four-step directions for a partner.

Ways to Teach It
In pairs, one student describes how to build a hidden block model, while the partner builds it and may ask two clarifying questions.
Students answer the prompt, “Which words made the directions clear, and where could the speaker add detail?” using evidence from recorded directions.
Run a Direction Relay in which teams listen once to four steps, complete them in order, and earn a point for accuracy.
Have students explain how to submit an assignment online, then switch roles and identify any missing or unclear step.
