What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a sequence of spoken directions, put the steps in order, and complete each action. They explain the sequence in their own words and give clear directions to others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student completes a three- or four-step task without skipping or rearranging steps. The student can restate the sequence accurately and give a partner specific directions that work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may remember only the first or last step, change the order, or combine separate actions. They may also give vague directions that lack sequence words, locations, or needed details.
How to Assess It
- Tell students, “Fold your paper, draw a star in the top corner, write your name under it, and circle the star.” Have them complete the task, then restate the steps in order.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs blocks, then have one student build a hidden model and guide a partner through recreating it with four spoken steps.
Ask, “What makes spoken directions easy to follow?” Then have students revise a vague set of directions together.
Play Direction Relay using task cards, with each student listening, restating the steps, and completing the actions in order.
Students explain a morning routine in four ordered spoken steps, then classmates identify any missing details.
