What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice when a word, sentence, or idea stops making sense. They choose a useful fix based on the problem. They then check whether the fix improved their understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name the exact point where meaning broke down. The student selects a strategy that fits the problem and explains what became clearer. If it fails, the student tries another approach.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may keep reading after losing meaning or assume strong readers understand every line immediately. They may highlight whole paragraphs, reread without a purpose, or rely on background knowledge that conflicts with the text. Some ask questions but never return to answer them.
How to Assess It
- Give students a challenging 150-word passage with one dense sentence. Ask them to mark where meaning breaks down, apply one strategy, and explain what became clearer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a difficult paragraph, sticky notes, and four strategy cards, then have them mark confusion points and test the best strategy.
Ask students to write about a time a text became confusing, what they tried, and which action helped most.
Play Strategy Match by giving teams confusion scenarios and having them choose, defend, and apply the best response.
Use a phone contract or game instructions, and have students annotate unclear parts before deciding what action to take.
