What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice when meaning becomes unclear and identify the word, sentence, or idea causing the problem. They choose a useful repair strategy and explain how it improved their understanding.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student independently marks the exact point where a text becomes confusing. After choosing a strategy, the student accurately paraphrases the passage and cites a detail that supports the revised understanding.

Common Misconceptions

Students may keep reading after meaning is lost or underline nearly every sentence without purpose. Some reread the same way repeatedly or trust background knowledge that conflicts with the text.

How to Assess It

Give students a dense 150-word passage. Ask them to mark where understanding broke down, name the strategy they used, and write a one-sentence corrected understanding.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a dense paragraph, sticky notes, and four strategy cards; they flag confusion, choose a card, and record the repaired meaning.

  2. Read a difficult paragraph aloud, then ask, “Where did meaning break down, and which clue or question helped you recover?”

  3. Play Strategy Match: teams draw a confusion card, select rereading, questioning, background knowledge, or annotation, then justify the best choice.

  4. Use a confusing school policy or appliance direction; students annotate unclear parts, ask questions, and rewrite it for a younger reader.
