What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice when a text stops making sense. They pause and try a specific fix, such as rereading, connecting prior knowledge, asking a question, or adding notes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can point to the exact word, sentence, or idea that caused confusion. They choose a useful strategy, apply it, and explain how their understanding changed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may keep reading after meaning is lost or assume strong readers never get confused. They may reread without changing pace, asking questions, or using context to solve the problem.
How to Assess It
- Give students one challenging paragraph and ask them to mark a confusing spot, name one repair strategy, and explain what became clearer.
