What Students Need to Do
- Students form useful questions before reading, add or revise questions while reading, and ask follow-up questions afterward. They use answers and remaining questions to clarify ideas, gather evidence, and find gaps in understanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a complex text, students ask specific questions before, during, and after reading. Their questions help them clarify confusing parts, make inferences, locate evidence, or identify information they still need.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask only recall questions or questions with yes or no answers. They may ask questions only after reading, confuse predictions with questions, or ignore questions that remain unanswered.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article with the body covered at first. Ask for one question before reading, one during reading, and one after reading, then have students identify which question improved their understanding most.
