What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students adjust their pace, phrasing, expression, and attention to match why they are reading. They may scan for a fact, read closely for meaning, or perform aloud for an audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a pace and reading style that fit the task. They can scan for details, slow down for complex ideas, and use phrasing that shows understanding.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think fluent reading always means reading quickly. They may use the same pace for every task or add dramatic expression without attending to meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students one paragraph and two purposes: find a specific fact, then explain the main idea. Ask them to read for each purpose and describe how they changed their reading.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs highlighters and a short article, then have them scan for names before rereading slowly to mark key ideas.
Ask students to explain in writing how they would read a poem differently from directions for assembling a model.
Play Purpose Switch by calling out scan, study, or perform while students adjust how they read the same passage.
Compare reading a bus schedule, a recipe, and a speech, then identify the pace and attention each one requires.
