What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students arrange ideas in an order readers can follow. They build clear openings, connected body paragraphs, and endings that fit the main point. They revise when ideas feel misplaced or disconnected.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The opening clearly sets up the main idea. Each paragraph has one clear purpose, and transitions show how ideas connect. The ending closes the piece without adding unrelated information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an introduction as a summary of the whole paper. They may add transitions randomly or start every paragraph with “first,” “next,” and “last.” Some conclusions introduce new evidence instead of closing the main idea.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a short, poorly organized draft. Ask them to reorder it, add two transitions, and write one concluding sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips from a short essay and have them arrange the introduction, body paragraphs, transitions, and conclusion.
Ask students to explain in writing how moving one paragraph could improve or weaken a sample essay.
Run a transition match game where students pair sentences using words such as however, for example, because, and as a result.
Have students organize a school event announcement with a clear opening, ordered details, helpful transitions, and a closing call to action.
