What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize a draft so readers can follow the main idea from beginning to end. They write an introduction, arrange related details, use clear transitions, and finish with a conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The writing opens with a clear focus, groups related ideas in a sensible order, and links sections with fitting transitions. The conclusion closes the piece without adding unrelated information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the introduction as a summary or add details that do not support the main idea. They may use transitions randomly or write a conclusion that introduces a new point.
How to Assess It
- Give students a mixed-up paragraph set. Ask them to order it, label the introduction and conclusion, and add two fitting transitions.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips from a short essay to sort into an introduction, ordered body sections, transitions, and a conclusion.
Ask students to explain which transition best connects two given paragraphs and defend their choice with evidence from both paragraphs.
Play Transition Match by having students pair cards showing idea relationships with cards labeled however, for example, next, or therefore.
Examine a school announcement and identify how its opening, sequence, transitions, and closing help readers understand what to do.
