What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students shape a draft so readers can follow the ideas from beginning to end. They create a clear opening, order supporting details, connect sections, and write an ending that fits the purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can arrange ideas in an order that fits the purpose and is easy to follow. The opening sets up the piece, transitions connect ideas, and the ending provides closure.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first sentence as an introduction even when it gives no clear direction. They may add transition words randomly or repeat the introduction as the conclusion. Some conclusions introduce a new main idea instead of closing the piece.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short draft with a weak opening, missing transitions, and no closing. Ask them to revise those three parts and label each change.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paragraph strips from a short essay, then have them arrange the strips and explain why their order works.
Compare two openings for the same topic and ask students to write which one better prepares the reader and why.
Play a transition match game where students pair sentences with words such as meanwhile, however, because, and finally.
Have students organize a principal request email with a clear reason, supporting details, connecting phrases, and a polite closing.
