What Students Need to Do
- Students break words into a prefix and a base word. They use those parts to spell the complete word and check whether letters should remain at the joining point.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly separate common prefixes from base words and spell the combined words. They preserve needed letters at the word boundary, as in misspell and unnecessary.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may drop a letter when the prefix and base meet, writing mispell instead of misspell. They may also mistake a beginning syllable for a prefix or change the base word's spelling.
How to Assess It
- Dictate rewrite, unhappy, preview, and misspell. Students spell each word, circle the prefix, and underline the base word.
