What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose information that directly helps answer an inquiry question. They gather useful facts from different source types, such as books, articles, interviews, and trusted websites.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find facts that clearly connect to a focused inquiry question. They use at least two source types and leave out interesting but unrelated details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect any fact about the broad topic, even when it does not answer the inquiry question. They may also use several pages from one website and call them varied sources.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students three short source excerpts and one inquiry question. Ask them to choose two relevant excerpts from different source types and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Set out books, articles, and printed webpages, then have students collect one useful fact from each for a class inquiry question.
Ask students to write: Which source best answers our inquiry question, and what specific information makes it useful?
Play Source Match by having teams pair inquiry questions with relevant source cards and explain each match.
Have students research a proposed school garden using a seed catalog, weather data, and an interview with the groundskeeper.
