What Students Need to Do: Students ask useful questions before they read, while they read, and after they finish. Their questions help them predict, clarify confusing parts, and find needed information.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students ask focused questions that fit the point in the reading process. They use text details to answer questions, clear up confusion, or identify information they still need.
Common Misconceptions: Students may ask only simple recall questions or questions unrelated to the text. They may also think every question must have one clear answer stated in the passage.
How to Assess It: Give students a one-page passage. Have them write one question before reading, one at a marked stopping point, and one after reading.

Lesson moves

Give students three colored sticky notes to record a question before reading, midway through the text, and after finishing.
Ask pairs to choose their strongest question and explain how it helped them understand a character, event, or idea.
Play a question sort game where students place sample questions under before, during, or after reading and defend each choice.
Read a school event flyer and have students ask questions to find the date, cost, location, and missing information.
