What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break longer words into syllables by noticing vowel and consonant patterns. They use each spoken part to spell the whole word and check whether the division makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students divide unfamiliar words into pronounceable syllables and keep blends, digraphs, prefixes, and suffixes together when needed. They use those divisions to spell multisyllabic words accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split consonant blends or digraphs, such as sh, ch, or tr. They may divide every vowel and consonant pair the same way. Some hear the right syllables but omit an unstressed vowel when spelling.

How to Assess It

Dictate adventure, complete, fantastic, and dependable. Have students spell each word, draw syllable breaks, and circle the pattern that guided each division.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to cut at syllable boundaries, rebuild, and spell, using words such as inspect, complete, and dependable.

  2. Ask students to compare robot and robin, then explain how the vowel sound affects where each word divides.

  3. Run a sorting relay with VCCV, VCV, VCCCV, and consonant plus le headings, then have teams spell each sorted word.

  4. Students find five long words in a school newsletter, mark the syllables, and use each word in a new sentence.
