What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break longer words into spoken and written syllables. In words such as rabbit and muffin, they divide between doubled middle consonants and write both letters.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a word such as kitten or muffin, students say both syllables, mark the break, and spell the word with both middle consonants. They can explain that one consonant appears on each side of the break.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may omit one middle consonant because they hear only one consonant sound, writing kiten for kitten. Others split after the doubled pair, as in rabb/it, or double consonants in words that need only one.
How to Assess It
- Say rabbit, muffin, and tennis aloud. Have students write each word, draw a slash at the syllable break, and circle the doubled consonants.
