What Students Need to Do: Students keep track of the books, articles, and webpages used during research. They list each source in a consistent format and place the entries in alphabetical order.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students include every source they used and record the required details accurately. They alphabetize entries and follow the class model for spacing, capitalization, and punctuation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list Google instead of the webpage they used. They may copy only a URL or leave out the author and title. They may also list sources in research order instead of alphabetical order.
How to Assess It: Give students source details for one book and one webpage. Ask them to make a two-entry works cited page using the class format and alphabetical order.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three source cards, then have them write complete entries and arrange them alphabetically on a sheet labeled Works Cited.
Show two sample pages and ask students to write which one is easier to follow and name two reasons why.
Play Citation Sort by having teams match author, title, publisher, date, and URL cards to the correct book or webpage.
After a short animal research task, have students add their book and website sources to a class works cited page.
