What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and homographs in sentences. They use context clues to explain each meaning and use the words correctly when speaking or writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify each word relationship in a sentence. They use context clues to explain an idiom or homograph and create an accurate example of their own.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any related words synonyms or mistake antonyms for words that are simply different. They may read idioms literally and assume a homograph has one meaning in every sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with four context sentences. Students identify one synonym pair, one antonym pair, one idiom meaning, and one homograph meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort word and sentence cards into synonym, antonym, idiom, and homograph groups, then explain each placement.
Ask, “How does the sentence help you decide what bat means?” Students cite clues and write a sentence using another meaning.
Play Vocabulary Four Corners: read a sentence, and students move to the labeled corner that names the word relationship.
Collect idioms and homographs from signs, menus, sports talk, and family conversations, then build a class context-clue wall.
