What Students Need to Do: Students decide which books, articles, pictures, or people can help with a research question. They collect facts that directly help answer it.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose sources that clearly connect to a given question. They find and record useful facts from more than one source while leaving out unrelated details.
Common Misconceptions: Students may collect interesting facts that do not answer their question. They may choose a source because of its cover or pictures without checking the information inside.
How to Assess It: Give students the question “How do bees help plants?” and three short source cards. Have them choose the best source and copy one fact that answers the question.

Lesson moves

Place books, photos, and printed webpages at stations; students select two sources about frog growth and record one fact from each.
Ask, “Which source would best explain why leaves change color?” then have partners defend their choice using covers, headings, and page details.
Play Source Match: teams pair question cards with source cards, earning a point only when they explain how the source helps.
Plan for a class pet by using care guides and a veterinarian interview to collect facts about food, space, and daily care.
