What Students Need to Do
- Students group related ideas and place them in an order readers can follow. They choose a fitting pattern, such as beginning, middle, and end or topic, details, and closing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong draft stays on one main idea. Its parts follow a clear order, and connecting words help readers move from one part to the next.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write ideas in the order they remember them, not the order a reader needs. They may add unrelated details or think paragraph spacing alone creates organization.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write five sentences explaining how to make a paper airplane. Include an opening, three steps in order, and a closing.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed sentence strips from a short paragraph to arrange and label as opening, details, and closing.
Ask students to explain which detail should come first in a class story and why that order helps the reader.
Play an ordering game where teams arrange event cards, then write the events as a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Examine a recipe or classroom directions and identify how its order helps someone complete the task correctly.
