Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students reread drafts and check spelling before sharing finished work. They correct common words and words with familiar spelling patterns, using classroom tools or adult help when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students spot and correct misspelled words in their own drafts with a word wall, sound chart, or teacher prompt. They apply familiar patterns and spell common words correctly most of the time.
Common Misconceptions: Students may spell every word exactly as it sounds, such as writing "sed" for "said." They may also correct a word while practicing but miss the same error in their own draft.
How to Assess It: Give students a two-sentence draft containing "sed," "jumpt," and "the cat pla." Ask them to circle each error and write the corrected words with teacher support.

Lesson moves

Give pairs letter tiles to rebuild misspelled words from sample sentences, then copy each corrected sentence onto paper.
Ask students to explain how they would check the spelling of one difficult word in their own draft.
Play Spelling Detective by hiding five misspelled words in a short draft for students to find and correct with a word wall.
