- Students check drafts for misspelled words and make corrections. They apply taught spelling patterns and rules, and accurately spell common words that do not follow predictable patterns.

- Students find and correct spelling errors in their own drafts. They use known patterns, spelling rules, word parts, and reference tools to confirm corrections.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may spell only by sound, writing "sed" for "said" or "hoping" as "hopeing." They may miss errors because a word looks familiar or rely on spellcheck without checking the suggested word.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph containing six misspelled words. Ask them to correct each word and label two corrections with the pattern or rule they used.
