What Students Need to Do: Students replace repeated names or nouns with pronouns that clearly point to the right person, animal, or thing. They choose forms that name the doer, receiver, or owner.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can write and edit a sentence such as “She helped him find his coat.” Each pronoun clearly names the doer, receiver, or owner.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write “Me went” or “Her gave” because those forms sound familiar. They may confuse his, her, or their with he, she, or they, or use a pronoun with no clear noun.
How to Assess It: Give students: “Mia helped Sam carry Sam’s lunch.” Ask them to rewrite it using three pronouns. Look for: “She helped him carry his lunch.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards to build “She handed him his coat,” then swap character cards and replace each pronoun.
Have students write three linked sentences about a child and pet, using pronouns for the doer, receiver, and owner.
Play Pronoun Fix-It: display “Her called he about they dog,” and have teams correct it to “She called him about their dog.”
Students label classroom supplies with sentences such as “This is her folder” and “Please give it to her.”
