What Students Need to Do: Students find the partner number that combines with a given number from 1 through 9 to make 10. They record the pair with a drawing or equation.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given 6, the student finds 4 and shows 6 + 4 = 10. The student can explain the missing part with objects, fingers, or a ten-frame.
Common Misconceptions: Students may state the next counting number instead of the missing part. They may fill a ten-frame incorrectly or count occupied spaces rather than empty spaces.
How to Assess It: Show seven counters on a ten-frame. Ask how many more make 10 and require a drawing or equation.

Lesson moves

Fill part of a ten-frame with counters, then count and record the empty spaces needed to make 10.
Ask students how a ten-frame shows the partner for 8 without counting every space.
Play make-ten memory with number cards whose pairs total 10.
Pack sets of 10 classroom items by finding how many more each partly filled container needs.
