Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students compare two numbers from 1 through 10 when both are shown as written numerals. They state which number is greater, which is less, or whether the numbers are equal.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student compares the written numerals 8 and 6 and says that 8 is greater than 6. The student compares 4 and 4 and identifies the numbers as equal.
Common Misconceptions: Students may compare the visual size or shape of printed numerals instead of their values. They may reverse greater and less or rely on nearby objects that are not part of the task.
How to Assess It: Show the student three numeral pairs from 1 through 10, including one equal pair. Ask the student to state each comparison using greater, less, or equal.

Lesson moves

Place two numeral cards beside matching ten-frame quantities, compare the values, and gradually remove the quantity supports.
Ask students how they know 9 is greater than 7 when only written numerals are shown.
Play numeral comparison draw with cards from 1 through 10 and verbal comparison statements.
Compare written numbers on two classroom labels to decide which shows the larger quantity.
