What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare whole numbers through 1,000,000 by examining digits from the greatest place value to the least. They record comparisons with greater than, less than, or equal symbols.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student compares 508,214 and 508,124 by moving from equal hundred-thousands through thousands to the hundreds place. The student writes 508,214 > 508,124 and explains the deciding place.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare number length only, focus on the last digits, or ignore placeholder zeros. They may choose a symbol without reading the comparison aloud.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to compare 406,090 with 406,900 and 725,040 with 725,040, using symbols and place-value explanations.
